Deeper Underground Release
I started work on this game a long time ago. It's a product of about 6ish years of on and off work on an idea that I had fresh out of University. I was too caught up in the other goings on of my life and always came up with reasons as to why I didn't work on this project but I am glad to say that it is finally at a place where I am comfortable to show it off.
The frustrating part of working on a project over such a long time period is this: Idea mutate. They rarely remain the same over a long period of time and this was the case many times with this project. I had originally wanted the focus to be entirely on the flamethrower and it's use throughout the levels (the Player would use the flamethrower to heat up boilers that would open doors, flood rooms, start up the med bay/ammo rooms etc.) but a Steampunk aesthetic isn't what I wanted and I felt it would have been overly complicated. I had thought to give it a more goofy atmosphere but it felt hard to take the end of the world seriously if the game was goofy.
This game taught me a lot and it helped to really give life to a lot of the advice and experience that I was exposed to in my Uni days, namely that sometimes, you've got to kill your babies (metaphorically, dont kill real babies lmao). Ideally this game would be far larger, longer and better written than it is, but in order to get this game out the door, I have to kill off the big ideas of what I wanted to do and accept the reality of what I am capable of doing. Too often, I think, we bite off more than we can chew and set our sights impossibly high and while it is important to go as far and as high as we can, it's often far better to shoot for the more realistic targets first. To make sure that the ideal game in your head informs your creative decisions, not demoralises you because you can't quite get it out exactly how you want it.
Anyway, thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for playing my game. I hope it was enjoyable.
